Canadian Registered Nurse Examination (CRNE)

Introduction

The Canadian Registered Nurse Examination (CRNE) was a nationally recognized licensure examination designed to assess the entry-to-practice competencies of registered nurses in Canada. The examination evaluated a candidate’s ability to apply nursing knowledge, clinical judgment, ethical principles, and professional standards in diverse healthcare settings. Although the CRNE has now been replaced by the NCLEX-RN, it remains an important reference framework for understanding Canadian nursing competencies, professional expectations, and regulatory standards. CRNE-based preparation continues to hold academic and conceptual relevance for internationally educated nurses and nursing students transitioning to Canadian nursing practice.

Scope

The scope of CRNE preparation encompasses a comprehensive review of Canadian nursing competencies across multiple domains, including professional practice, ethical and legal responsibilities, health promotion, illness management, clinical decision-making, communication, leadership, and patient-centred care. It integrates nursing theory with practical application in acute care, community health, mental health, long-term care, and specialty practice settings, aligned with Canadian healthcare values and regulatory expectations.
