Course Description: A chronic inflammatory disease, carotid atherosclerosis. The development, progression, and final rupture of atherosclerotic plaque all depend on inflammation. Another word for carotid artery disease is carotid artery stenosis. This expression refers to a constriction of the carotid arteries.Plaque, which is an accumulation of fatty substances and cholesterol deposits, frequently contributes to this narrowing. The development of carotid stenosis has been shown in numerous natural history studies to be a reliable indicator of the risk of stroke.
